The three Assistant Surveillance Commissioners primarily assist the Chief Surveillance Commissioner in his duty to keep under review the exercise and performance of functions under Part II of RIPA and under RIP(S)A by those public authorities other than the law enforcement agencies.Their main duties are:

  • Visiting local authorities (councils) and government departments or agencies in accordance with the schedule of inspections set by the Chief Surveillance Commissioner
  • Examining, through physical inspection and discussions with key officers, the policies, practices and procedures used and the records associated with the authorisation, review, renewal and cancellation of covert tactics
  • Completing a report for the Chief Surveillance Commissioner on their findings and ensuing recommendations

The Assistant Surveillance Commissioners also occasionally undertake inspections of law enforcement agencies alongside the Surveillance Inspectors.
